EAG Wins 1st place at the 2015 Microscopy and Microanalysis Conference
The following image, acquired by Sheri Neva of Evans Analytical Group, won 1st place at the recent 2015 Microscopy and Microanalysis conference (M&M) in Portland, OR under the category of Artistic Microscopy.
This is a piece from a sword, “Kawagane” (Iron or Hard Steel), that came off at the time of forging the point. It did not go through the final heat treatment, this is why you can see ferrite and pearlite (which consists of ferrite and cementite). These are some of the phases found in steel and other iron-carbon alloys. The appearance reveals the different phases and the color was added using Photoshop. For the competition this year, the samples had to be metal and this class was for color images.
The sample was cross sectioned, mounted, fine polished and then etched with 2% nital.
