What Do You Do "In the Lab" at EAG Laboratories in St. Louis?
A lot of people ask what we do here at Eurofins EAG Laboratories in St. Louis. The best way to summarize our services at this location is to to say that we do investigative analytical chemistry. In other words, if any product or manufacturing problem can be solved by performing analytical chemistry, we can probably do that testing in our lab!
How Does Analytical Chemistry Help Solve My Product Problems?
Let’s say you have a business, and your products or manufacturing line has problems including particles, yellowing or cracking parts, strange odors, etc. These are problems that can be solved with investigative analytical chemistry.
In this video, Dr. Al Lee, from EAG Laboratories in St. Louis, shares more about the ways investigative analytical chemistry can solve your product problems.
Example 1: Particles Shedding from Product
As Dr. Lee illustrates in the video, we noticed particles shedding from the videographer’s headphones. This can be a common problem that product manufacturers face. To help manufacturers solve this problem we use analytical chemistry and root cause analysis to answer these questions:
1. What is the material of composition? Is this product made up of what it’s supposed to be made up of? 2. Are there contaminants that caused the outer coating to break down?
There are a number of ways we can go about solving questions using chemistry.
Example 2: Product Fire Damage
In the second example in the video, Dr. Lee discusses a situation in which thousands of wine bottles were potentially exposed to contaminants in a warehouse fire. The most important question was:
1. Is this wine safe to drink?
Using chemistry, our lab can test for marker compounds for something that’s been in a fire to answer that question. The technique mentioned in the video is Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
