In the Lab: What's that Smell?

What Do You Do "In the Lab" at EAG Laboratories in St. Louis?

The best way to summarize our services at this location is to to say that we do investigative analytical chemistry. In other words, if any product or manufacturing problem can be solved by performing analytical chemistry, we can probably do that testing in our lab!

Our first “In the Lab” video explains more about what we do! Watch now: In the Lab: Investigative Analytical Chemistry

How Does Analytical Chemistry Help Me Discover Why My Product Stinks?

The team at EAG Laboratories helps manufacturers find answers by using chemistry to understand product problems like strange odors.

In this video, Wendy and Carl, from EAG Laboratories in St. Louis, work together to figure out why a product has a strange or “off” odor.

Example: Candlemaker Wants to Know Why Product Smells Bad

As Carl illustrates in the video, we used a heated headspace experiment and heated the sample in a sealed vial. Any volatile species in the sample will migrate to the headspace in the vial which will then be analyzed by a technique called, Gas Chromatography or GC

Through the experiment, Wendy and Carl discovered that the candle wax was full of stinky aldehydes, an organic compound that may have been introduced when the supplier was making the pellets for the wax and they were overheated.

This is just one example of the questions and challenges the team at EAG laboratories can solve for manufacturers.
