We were asked to investigate a smartphone touch screen with a visible blemish. Typically, touch screens are oleophobic, repelling oils from our fingers. Suspecting a surface defect, we employed Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) for its ability to precisely identify organic molecules with trace detection limits. The TOF-SIMS analysis indicated that, in the unaffected area, fragment ions from the oleophobic coating dominated the spectra. However, on the blemished section, additional amine ions were detected alongside the coating. To discern whether these amine ions were covering or replacing the oleophobic layer, we utilized gas cluster ion beam analysis. The resulting profiles revealed that the amines had indeed replaced the oleophobic coating.
