Testing for Colorants and Additives like Sudan Red Dye

Is Your Product Free of Problem Dyes?

Sudan Red Dyes are a class of synthetic azo dyes. Some of these dyes are safer than others. Are you concerned about possible contamination or adulteration of your products that are colored with Sudan Red Dyes?

There have been recent steps taken by the US FDA to issue fines to companies that import raw materials used in cosmetics. Products that are identified as having the banned substances are required to be removed from the market.

Identify the True Identity of the Colorant

Eurofins EAG can test products for the presence of unintended Sudan Dyes. Using techniques like Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry in tandem with UV detection (LC-MS UV), our scientists can not only detect dyes or colorants at low concentrations, but can identify their true identity based on its mass spectral fingerprint.

Quick Answers to Your Product Contamination Questions

Based on MS fragmentation patterns, we can differentiate a Sudan III dye from An FD&C Red No. 3 or other natural dyes from extracts from algae plants. We are able to achieve unambiguous identification based on both retention time and mass spectrometry, even in complicated sample matrices such as ointments, gels, creams or lotions. As we also possess an extensive dye and colorant library that can screen for a wide spectrum of dyes, we can complete the testing very quickly. Once identified, if requested, we can further quantify the level in the product or determine if the level is below a specific threshold. Contact us for more information.
